Theory and Method: Exegesis, Hermeneutics, Apologetics, Homiletics
After making this discovery, their should be an innate desire to find a method that assures they develop an encyclopedic knowledge of the word of God, because the colloquialism is true; “an aspiration to preach, without a burden to study, is an exercise in futility. Those who are called to shepherd God’s flock should begin as rapt apprentices, who spend a lifetime in the unending pursuit of preaching that withstands exegetical scrutiny, cognizance of the word which eradicates error, defence of the hope within you to accomplish the task, and delivery of the word that leaves the lost asking what “must I do to be saved.” Paul’s admonition to Timothy to “rightly divide the word of truth” is a task requiring unparalleled discipline and dedication.
The four principles requisite for a life of service in preaching ministry are Exegesis, Hermeneutics, Apologetics and Homiletics.
Paul started his discourse to his spiritual son, Timothy, by admonishing him to, “study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needed not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” (2 Timothy 2:15). By this, I’m reminded of Paul’s words to the Church at Corinth, “the foolishness of God, is greater than the wisdom of men.” Paul seems to imply that a trend was birthed then, that continues today, which is, “the simpler and more detailed the truths of God are, the more we are in danger of being ignorant of them.”
“Give the world 100 preachers who truly fear God and desire to do His will, and I believe, they will shake the gates of hell and change the present epidemic of apostasy.” ~Bishop Michael V. Johnson, Ph.D.
The Armour Institute has developed a 6-Week Continuing Education Program entitled “Theory and Method: Exegesis, Hermeneutics, Apologetics, Homiletics”, that will examine the veracity of these four providential principles requisite for the preaching ministry, and critically address how they are of grave necessity for Kingdom formation and unity to be in full function in the Ecclesia. In it, we will profile through this in-depth study, that if Paul’s words to the Romans are true, which are “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent?” Then the delivery of the Word of God to His people is the most missional métier in human history.
